Geographical location of Yakhab region
In 35 km of the historical and beautiful city of Kashan, there is a protected area that is adjacent to Kavir National Park with an area of about 275 thousand hectares which is one of the largest protected areas of wildlife in Iran. The name of this area is Yakhab. The reason for naming this area is due to the existence of Yakhab spring. If you want to see the desert and Zagros of Iran in one place, you should take a trip to this region.
There is a mountainous island in this area called Yakhab Mountain Range, in this mountainous area there are beautiful valleys and numerous springs and this region is lush and indescribable in the spring. This mountainous area is surrounded by deserts and sand dunes with its unique wildlife.
Beautiful wildlife biodiversity of Yakhab
Yakhab region is one of the richest habitats in the country with 100 species of birds, 15 species of mammals and 17 species of reptiles. The most beautiful fox in Iran whose name is Blanford’s fox (Vulpes cana), lives in this area and the first photo of this fox was taken in this area in 2017. This species of fox has a global reputation and it is banned from the World Trade List due to its beautiful tail.
A pristine settlement at the Yakhab Wildlife Refuge
A beautiful village is located in the pristine area of Yakhab Mountain, which is called Bisheh village and it has beautiful fields and gardens where different products are planted.
The houses in this village have a traditional texture and pleasant weather in summer and spring and the singing of the beautiful birds of the region such as Common Rock Thrush (Monticola saxatilis), partridges (Perdicinae) and Western Rock Nuthatch (Sitta Neumayer) makes you want to stay at least for one night.

A species called Jebeer gazelle (Gazella bennettii), which is a coquettish of the Iranian desert, can be seen in the desert part of the Yakhab region. This species is very similar to the deer (Gazella), and seeing it, is a dream for all desert hikers and wildlife photographers.
If you go to Yakhab Desert in winter, you can also see the Iranian Desert Bride there, a bird that migrates to this area thousands of kilometers from Siberia. The name of this bird is Bustard, one of the heaviest birds in Iran, and its romantic dance is enjoyable and spectacular for any desert hiker. This bird is one of the world-protected birds which is under the protection of Iran’s department of Environment.
If you have a trip to Yakhab desert in spring or summer, you will definitely be attracted to the view of the ground, because in this period of the year, you can see different and beautiful species of reptiles, including Varanus griseus and all kinds of snakes and lizards. Especially the endemic species of Maranjab snake sking (Ophiomorus maranjabensis), which only lives in this part of the world.
All you have to do is take a walk in the area for one night to better understand the special scenery of the region, which seems to have been scattered diamonds in the desert. These luminous diamonds are nothing but sparkling eyes of the Keyserling’s Plate Tailed Gecko (Teratoscincus keyserlingii)!
Feloidea of Yakhab Wildlife Refuge

Sand Cat (Felis margarita) is the most beautiful and smallest cat in Iran that lives in the desert region of Yakhab. In 1396, three species of cats from 8 Iranian cats in this area were photographed for the first time. These three species include sand cat (Felis margarita), wild cat (Felis silvestris) and caracal. Caracal has a common habitat with sand cat and is one of the most skilled and unique hunters of birds. This species is known as “desert swift-footed”. It has a elongated body and long ears.
If the timing is right, you can see it among the desert bushes in the Yakhab region, so that it has camouflaged itself. In ancient Persian, Caracal was called Parvanak (small butterfly). “Shater Shir ” is another name for this, because the caracal runs faster than the lion and also informs other animals about the presence of the lion.
