Howz-e Soltan Lake and Salt Dome

Salty Journey In The Middle Of Desert

How many times have you encountered a lake in the heart of the desert? How many times have you seen a salt lake up close? Well, you can watch both of this breath taking landscape, a beautiful Dome.

In the middle of Qom-Tehran highway, there is a salt lake called Howz-e Soltan. The lake has penetrated five layers apart from each other up to depth of 42 m from ground and capture 240 square kilometers.

It is a remnant of the Paratethys sea, which started to dry from the Pleistocene epoch, leaving lake Urmia and the Caspian sea and other bodies of water. This attraction is also known by the names of Qom Lake, Kevinamak, Saveh Lake and Shahi Lake, but be careful, this is not the lake you are going to visit. In fact Qom salt Lake is much larger and is located in southeastern Qom.

The area is bit far from civilization and city, so its quietness and free spirit of the nature make it brilliant for an incredible adventure. The glossy surface of the lake reflects the sky view, so it’s famous as natural mirror of Iran. However I have to say it’s not the only exceptional phenomenon in the area.

Just twenty kilometers from the Lake, there is Toghroud salt dome, the only symmetrical salt dome in the world is located.

The geological age of this natural attraction goes back about 60 million years, and with a small lake in its heart, made a unique landscape. Salt crystals that are born from the dome have created beautiful conglomerate blades, which double its beauty. This unmatched dome is very long and extends to 3 km.

What can be more attractive than hiking miles alongside a mirror, cycling or skating on a salty land or climbing a rare salt dome? We make you sure it’s a different experience of feeling the earth. In additional you can take wonderful photos and watch the rainy star sky of desert in the night. Some people say salt and minerals in the water has medial effect and try to swim in the lake.

Watching migratory birds that come from north Caspian countries, following mammals like rabbit, fox and deer also would be fun.

Best Time to Go

The best time to go to the lake is early spring and mid-fall because in the rest of the year you will not be safe from extreme cold or intense sunlight or you lose your chance to see the lake. At the spring and autumn time the area have moderate weather and water level is appropriate.

How to Get There

This wonderful area is located in the middle of Qom-Tehran highway and you can visit it during travel to Isfahan or Kashan. Since you have to enter the desert side path to reach the lake, so a local guide would helpful to find the right way and prevent getting lost in the middle of nowhere.
